Dallas, TX (April 30, 1992)—Applied Engineering, Apple’s oldest third-party
developer, began shipping today their newest addition to their Macintosh
networking line, QuadraLink DMA. Using Direct Memory Access, the NuBus card
provides four high-speed serial ports in conjunction with the built-in modem
and printer ports.
Applied Engineering previously released QuadraLink—a four serial port card
without DMA—to solve the problem of “too many serial devices—too few ports.” AE
upgraded the QuadraLink design to include Direct Memory Access to meet the
demands of users involved with high-speed serial transfers. The QuadraLink DMA,
which retails for $499, is especially useful for power users running 9600bps
and faster modems and for users who are running several serial devices
simultaneously. QuadraLink DMA’s Direct Memory Access allows all four ports to
run at 57.6Kbaud with no noticeable effect on the computer’s processor. For
even more ports, simply add more QuadraLink DMA’s.
The QuadraLink DMA package includes AE Shadow software. AE Shadow enables
programs that do not use the Communications ToolBox (CTB) to recognize and use
the four extra ports. AE Shadow also provides AppleTalk compatibility and, when
used with AppleTalk’s InterNet Router software, can route up to six AppleTalk
zones together.
QuadraLink DMA can also take full advantage of AE’s ShadowLAN software for the
Macintosh. ShadowLAN allows users to share the four QuadraLink DMA ports as
well as the printer or modem port with other Macs across an AppleTalk or
EtherTalk network. By simply selecting a port (QuadraLink DMA’s ports 1-4,
Modem or Printer) and selecting “Share This Port” from ShadowLAN’s Control
Panel, the device connected to that port will be immediately available to other
ShadowLAN users across the network. This feature allows computers to share
non-network devices such as standard modems, label printers, StyleWriters,
envelope printers, etc. The software retails for $149 and is bundled with
QuadraLink DMA for $599 retail.
ShadowLAN also supports multiple QuadraLink and multiple network zones. Just
select the zone you want from the pop-up menu in the control panel. In
addition, each shared port can be given a unique password to protect it from
unauthorized access. ShadowLAN is fully compatible with Apple’s Communications
ToolBox (CTB) and also supports older non-CTB software.
